Unable to Compare

When attempting to compare documents, you may receive an error message: "Unable to Compare"

Unable to compare

Scenario

When you have Microsoft Office 2010 and Lync 2013 installed, you may see an error message that says "Unable to compare" when you try to compare two documents. This is because Lync 2013 adds Office 2013 registry keys, even though Office 2013 is not installed, and this interferes with Workshare Compare.

To resolve the issue, remove the Office 2013 registry keys that are not being used.

Resolution

  1. Close all Workshare and Microsoft applications.
  2. Open the Registry as an administrator:
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. In the Start Menu, either in the Run box or in the Search box, type "regedit" and press enter.
In the Search box, type "regedit"
  1. If prompted by User Account Control, click Yes to open the Registry Editor. You will need administrator privileges to do this.

  1. Once the registry is open navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{00020905-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}. You should see a key named 8.6.
In the registry, you will see a key called 8.6
  1. Back up the key by right-clicking 8.6 and selecting Export. Save the key as a .reg file to a safe location with a name of your choice.
  2. Once the key backed up, remove the 8.6 folder by right-clicking it and selecting Delete.
  3. Accept any warning prompts.
  4. Close the registry.
  5. Relaunch Workshare Compare.
