Sync status icons not appearing in the Sync folder

When you have multiple sync applications installed, you may find that Workshare's sync status icons are not displayed in the Workshare Sync folder in Windows Explorer.

Scenario

Workshare’s desktop app uses icon overlays, a feature of Windows operating systems, to display the sync status of items in the Workshare Sync folder.

User-added image

Many sync applications also use icon overlays (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive, SkyDrive, Box). Windows Explorer supports the use of 15 different icon overlays at any time, so if you have multiple sync applications installed, Workshare’s icon overlays may not be displayed.

Workaround

To workaround the issue, you can remove unwanted sync applications.

Alternatively, you can force Workshare's icon overlays to be displayed; however, this will cause the icon overlays of other sync applications to be ignored.

To force Workshare's icon overlays to be displayed:

Note: These steps involve modifying the Registry. The Registry is not backed up automatically so changes to the Registry cannot be undone. If you're not familiar with the Registry or you'd like assistance, please contact Workshare Support.

  1. Open the Registry Editor (Start > regedit.exe).
  2. Browse to the ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers key:
  • On 32-bit Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
  • On 64-bit Windows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

The Registry key for every potential icon overlay is displayed alphabetically. Only the first 15 in the list are displayed.

The Registry keys for Workshare's icon overlays are:
  • ConnectForDesktopNotSynced
  • ConnectForDesktopNowSynced
  • ConnectForDesktopPartSynced
  • ConnectForDesktopWarning
  1. Add enough spaces to the beginning of the names of Workshare's Registry keys so they appear first in the list. To add spaces to a name:
    1. Right-click the key and choose Rename.
    2. At the beginning of the name, add more spaces than the first key the ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers. For example, if the first key in ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers has 3 spaces, add 4 spaces to the Workshare key.
    3. On your keyboard, press Enter.
  2. Do this for all of Workshare's Registry keys.
  3. Close the Registry Editor.
  4. Restart your computer.
