Error during installation: "A required component is missing. Please repair or re-install “C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Regedit.exe and C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe"

Scenario

  1. Install Professional 9.x using the EXE bundle.
  2. Observe the installation rolls back and throws the error below:

Workaround

To workaround this issue, please capture the MSI logs and inspect the custom action failure(s). Below is an example:

SFXCA: Failed to create new CA process via RUNDLL32. Error code: 2
CustomAction GenerateMachineId returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
  1. Use Orca software and create an MST file to drop the following CustomActions:
GenerateMachineId
SendInstallEvent
  1. Run msiexec /i Workshare.Professional.msi TRANSFORMS=SkipGenerateMachineId.mst
