What's the difference between Clean and Lightspeed Clean?

Learn the difference between the Clean and Lightspeed Clean actions in Workshare Protect.

What are Clean and Lightspeed Clean?

Every time you send an email with an attached Word document, PowerPoint presentation or Excel spreadsheet, Workshare checks the attachment to see if it breaches security policies. If it does, Workshare removes the hidden data using either the Clean or the Lightspeed Clean action, according to what has been set with the Workshare Configuration Manager or Policy Designer.

When the Clean action is applied, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel is opened in the background to complete the action. When the Lightspeed Clean action is applied, Workshare's own processes are used and there is no need to open Word, PowerPoint or Excel, making the action much faster and reducing the potential for conflicts with other 3rd party add-ins for Microsoft Office.

Note: PDFs are cleaned with the PDF Clean action, which behaves the same way as Lightspeed Clean.

What's cleaned?

In Workshare 9 and below, Clean and Lightspeed Clean remove different types of hidden data. They also display the removed data differently in the cleaned file. A side-by-side comparison of is described in Appendix C of the Workshare Professional 9 User Guide

In Workshare 9.5 and above, both Clean and Lightspeed Clean remove the same hidden data and display the same results in the cleaned file.
